Abstrak

This study examines the concept of ekklesia in public space through an ecclesiological reading of Matthew 16:18 within the Indonesian church context. The central issue addressed is how the church understands its identity and mission amid social, political, ecological, and digital challenges. Using qualitative library research combined with biblical-theological analysis, this article rereads Matthew 16:18 alongside biblical metaphors of the church, particularly the temple of God, the body of Christ, and the bride of Christ. The findings show that the church is not merely an internal liturgical community, but a public, relational, holy, and missional community called to stand at the “gates” where destructive powers threaten human life, creation, justice, and faith. The study argues that the metaphor of “standing at the gates” offers a contextual ecclesiological framework for Indonesian churches to engage public realities critically and constructively. This framework calls local churches to reshape worship, spiritual formation, leadership, ecological responsibility, digital witness, and social participation as expressions of their identity in Christ. The study contributes to the development of Indonesian public ecclesiology and recommends further empirical research through narrative or case-study approaches to test this framework in concrete congregational contexts.
